Love Made Easy

Here in Switzerland, there are four official languages -- German, French, Italian and Romansh -- so it makes sense that English is so pervasive. Why print something up in four languages when one can do the job?

Yet I was still surprised when I heard about the new movie Love Made Easy. In terms of cast, crew and financing, Love Made Easy is Swiss. However, it was made in California in English -- because the money people wanted a movie they could sell to the English-speaking world.

Love Made Easy opens here next week, and I'm curious to see how well it does and if it's dubbed; if it's not dubbed, I think a lot of Swiss will bristle at reading subtitles on a Swiss movie. I'm also wondering if the movie will actually find an audience outside Switzerland, because language aside, it still seems to have a particularly Swiss sense of humor.

Of course, since English is my mother tongue, I couldn't be happier about this latest development, and I hope it's just the tip of the iceberg. Switch everything over to English, I say, and the sooner the better.
