The Da Vinci Code

5/10. Saw this yesterday at the Gotthard in Bern.

An overwrought thriller that makes the mistake of equating popularity with importance. It’s easy to imagine the movie that might have been had everyone involved (with the lone exception of the wonderful Ian McKellen) taken it all a lot less seriously.

Funnily, the fact of the movie’s existence undermines its believability. The Da Vinci Code tells us that the Church would kill to hush up the wild story about Christ it “reveals”. Yet wild stories about Christ are “revealed” all the time. For example, in The Da Vinci Code.

Fact is, while the Church does its fair share of complaining when it thinks it’s under attack, it's more or less unconquerable. And it knows it.
