Typically when someone isn't openly hostile about De Palma, they are at least energetically dismissive of his abilities as a filmmaker. But how many American directors, their failures aside, have made ten great movies? I'd have a hard time making a list like this for a number of directors who by most are unflinchingly regarded as brilliant, where there's simply no debate about their greatness. Yet it's De Palma who's regularly relegated to footnotes.
