Google Rebuffs; Yahoo Buckles

Kudos to Google for refusing to take part in a Bush administration scheme to rob its users of their right to privacy:
Google Inc. is rebuffing the Bush administration's demand for a peek at what millions of people have been looking up on the Internet's leading search engine — a request that underscores the potential for online databases to become tools for government surveillance.
Meanwhile, Yahoo gets the gas face:
Yahoo Inc., which runs the Internet's second-most used search engine behind Google, confirmed Thursday that it had complied with a similar government subpoena.
You can read all about it here.

Hi, Caren!

Happily, this issue has been taken on by Sen. Patrick Leahy. Yesterday I read that he's written to Alberto Gonzales, asking how the Justice Department intends to use the data it wants from Google and what it's doing to protect the privacy of Americans who conduct searches on the Internet.

I'm sure Leahy will get stiff-armed, just like everyone who challenges the Bush Administration, but still it's encouraging that a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee has gotten involved.

Regarding being in Europe, my timing has turned out to be perfect. I moved here in '99, right before everything over there went pear-shaped (to put it mildly). Here's hoping the Democrats find someone with intelligence *and* charisma to take on the Republicans in '08.
