10/10. Watched this Tuesday evening on DVD.

Riffing on Frank Tuttle's classic This Gun for Hire, Jean-Pierre Melville's masterpiece succeeds at being both a sublime portrait of isolation and amorality and a stylish, exciting thriller.

Melville is well served by a strong cast, particularly Alain Delon, whose inscrutable hit man is one of cinema's greatest antiheros.
