The Descent. I just found out that this terrific British horror movie has been picked up by Lions Gate. The movie will have its North American premiere in January at the Sundance Film Festival and then be released theatrically sometime next summer.
Sony Sucks, Too. I've been so busy picking on Universal that I failed to notice what an awful year Sony's been having. They, too, have had just one 2005 release gross more than $100 million, and so they've decided to can their marketing president, Geoffrey Ammer.
Here, however, I think it was the movies and not the marketing that were the problem. Did Ammer's bosses really expect him to make lemonade out of lemons like Stealth, Into the Blue, Man of the House and Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo? Poor guy smells like a scapegoat to me.
Actual Profitability. On November 24, George Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck joined the ranks of the actually profitable when its gross topped $17.5 million. The movie, which cost just $7 million to produce, has so far brought in over $21 million. Hopefully this means we won't have to endure another crappy Ocean's Eleven sequel.
Meanwhile, Walk the Line, which was produced for $28 million, will achieve actual profitability sometime this week, when its domestic gross reaches $70 million.
FC Thun. Tonight is their final match of the current round, in Prague against AC Sparta Praha. Thun needs only a draw to qualify for the UEFA Cup. We are, as always, cautiously optimistic.
