Over the Edge

10/10. Watched this Tuesday evening on DVD.

A group of teens are living in a planned community that was built without them in mind. Surrounded by houses and fields and little else, they mitigate their boredom with liquor, drugs and petty crime. After a confrontation with the police leads to one of their deaths, and with their parents growing frightened and making plans against them, the teens join together for a violent act of rebellion.

An all-time favorite of mine that I've watched perhaps a dozen times, Over the Edge was only available on VHS until about a year and a half ago when Warner Home Video finally released it on DVD. The disc looks and sounds great, and it features an informative commentary with director Jonathan Kaplan, producer George Litto, and screenwriters Charlie Haas & Tim Hunter. (Hunter went on to direct two other important teen movies, Tex and the masterpiece River's Edge.)

So how this is different from Over the HEDGE? Seems like a blatant rip-off...

You're right, it's more or less the exact same movie.

Freak.
