The Descent

This excellent British horror movie (which previously I wrote about here and here) opens tomorrow in the States. The American version has had its ending screwed up, but I've decided you should go see it anyway. If you don't want to take my word for it, check out the positive reviews here.

Oooh, tell us about the original ending! I thought the movie was ho-hum. Scary, but only very superficially. Just creepy things lurking around every corner...

The original ending can be seen here.

What's missing from the U.S. version is the end of Sarah's story: the resolution of her visions of her daughter and the climax of her 'descent' into madness. For me, this is a near-terminal exclusion, because Sarah's story is at the movie's core.

Your 'creepy things lurking' are foreshadowed a bit, but they don't actually become a factor for almost an hour. Until then, it's just one mishap after another as these women make their way through the caves.

When the creepy things finally show up, my reaction was, "Aw, come on, they were having a hard enough time!"
