Rear Window

10/10. Watched this on April 15 on DVD.

It's not necessary to understand that what Jimmy Stewart's character chooses to see out his apartment window is directly linked to his skepticism about romantic love. In Rear Window, as in all of Alfred Hitchcock's masterpieces, text and subtext are intertwined, yet it's possible to enjoy one without consciously pondering the other.

The ability to merge entertainment and intelligence to the detriment of neither was a big part of Hitchcock's genius, and it's something sorely missing from today's popular movies, most of which are half-forgotten as soon as the lights come up.
